After months of organizing remotely, the United Methodist Queer Delegate Caucus assembled for lunch at the Hilton Garden Inn in uptown Charlotte, NC. The gathering was largely a hopeful one, with delegates joyful to be together.

Delegates from across the connection joined in a World Wide Worship Service and hospitality dinner sponsored by the Love Your Neighbor Coalition (LYNC) and the National Association of Filipino-American United Methodists. Hymns, scripture, and liturgy were joyfully shared in English, French, Kiswahili, and Portuguese.

Together with the Upper Room and Abington Press, the United Methodist Creation Justice Movement has developed a self-guided reflection that invites participants to step out onto The Green, the park opposite the Convention Center, and “to experience God through creation.”

The 13-20 minute prayer walk draws participants through seven short meditations, guiding attention toward the grass, trees, and thanksgiving for the natural world.

Removing, or at least reducing the barrier of language is one part of this outreach and relationship building. So, LYNC has made translation a key part of its focus at the General Conference.

Delegates at this month’s United Methodist Church General Conference will have the opportunity to vote for a formal apology for the illegal overthrow of the independent nation of Hawaiʻi (Petition #20582-IC-R9999, page 899 ADCA).

As delegates prepare to come together for the Charlotte General Conference, LYNC’s Global Relations Team is increasing its efforts to provide spaces where trusting relationships can be formed.

Holy conferencing and connectionalism cannot happen without relationships. The Global Relationships Team builds bridges where people can hear one another.

What should be the response to COP 28 (The 28th Conference of the Parties) from United Methodists?

The Love Your Neighbor Leadership Team met in October in Charlotte, NC, the location next year’s United Methodist General Conference. Leaders worked to make plans for the witness of the fourteen progressive organizations in the coalition.

The Love Your Neighbor Coalition (LYNC) calls on the Council of Bishops to challenge efforts to withhold giving by local churches.
With heavy hearts we mourn the actions by some who seek to divide us further; Specifically, the punitive call by the Wesley Covenant Association (WCA) that urges congregations, who are in the midst of good faith separation negotiations, to withhold their shared giving.

In light of our current unequal access to world health systems as well as our geopolitical situation, we support this decision.

Ever the bridge builder and a lighter of torches, Rev. John Wagner is now retiring from leadership of UM for Kairos Response (UMKR) and passing the torch. “At LYNC, we want to celebrate John’s work and glean the wisdom he’s developed as a patient and persistent voice for justice and especially in Palestine,” said Mittie Quinn, Co-Chair of LYNC. “John’s gentle consciousness raising helped LYNC with an ever-expanding understanding of global Methodism and the interconnections between oppressions.
