Legislative Advocate Scholarship Program

The Love Your Neighbor Coalition and the Oregon-Idaho Conference of The United Methodist Church with generous support from The Collins Foundation are excited to provide Leadership Development Scholarships for General Conference 2016 when it meets May 10-12 in Portland, Oregon.

Building on a successful program in 2012, when 12 young adult leaders were trained as legislative advocates with skills for legislative tracking and analysis, advocacy, and communication, there will be 16 positions available at the 2016 General Conference. The advocates will have an excellent opportunity to learn the legislative process and structure of The United Methodist Church.

Scholarship recipients are paired with seasoned legislative advocates who have already been trained and are well-versed in the workings of General Conference. Some of those advocates were scholarship recipients in 2016, continuing a mission of leadership development.

Applicants need to commit to being in Portland May 8-20, participating in advance reading and telephone conferences, and following the guidance of the legislative coordinators.

The scholarship will provide funding for travel and lodging for the young adult advocates.

Selection will be based on broad commitments to social justice within The United Methodist Church, potential for learning growth and leadership development. Sixteen recipients in total will be selected, with at least six of those recipients coming from the Oregon-Idaho Conference.

Applications can be completed using this on-line form.

Deadline for application is Sunday, March 20 at 10: p.m. ET. All applicants will be notified prior to April 1. For more information, contact Chett Pritchett, Methodist Federation for Social Action Executive Director at chett@mfsaweb.org.
